(AP) ? Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland took no chances after one of his assistant prosecutors was assassinated two months ago. McLelland said he carried a gun everywhere he went and took extra care when answering the door at his home.

"I'm ahead of everybody else because, basically, I'm a soldier," the 23-year Army veteran boasted in an interview less than two weeks ago.

On Saturday, he and his wife were found dead in their home just outside the town of Forney, about 20 miles from Dallas, killed in an attack for which authorities have given no motive.

"Everybody's a little on edge and a little shocked," Forney Mayor Darren Rozell said. "It appears this was not a random act."

The killings came less than two weeks after Colorado's prison chief was gunned down at his front door by a white-supremacist ex-convict, and two months after Kaufman County Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse was shot to death in a parking lot a block from his office Jan. 31. No arrests have been made in Hasse's slaying.

Kaufman County Sheriff David Byrnes confirmed Sunday that the McLellands had been shot. As for whether their deaths were related to Hasse's slaying, Byrnes said there was nothing to indicate that "for sure," but declined to discuss it further during a news conference.

McLelland himself, in an Associated Press interview, raised the possibility that Hasse was gunned down by a white supremacist gang. McLelland, elected DA in 2010, said that Hasse hadn't prosecuted any cases against white supremacists but that his office had handled several, and those gangs had a strong presence in the area.

"We put some real dents in the Aryan Brotherhood around here in the past year," McLelland said after Colorado's corrections director, Tom Clements, was shot to death March 19 when he answered the doorbell.

Kaufman Police Chief Chris Aulbaugh said recently the FBI was checking to see if Hasse's killing could be related to Clements'. Evan Spencer Ebel, a former Colorado inmate and white supremacist who authorities believe killed Clements, died in a March 21 shootout with Texas deputies about 100 miles from Kaufman.

McLelland, 63, said after Hasse's slaying that he carried a gun everywhere he went, even to walk his dog. He figured that was where assassins were more likely to try to get him. He said he had warned all his employees to be constantly on the alert.

"The people in my line of work are going to have to get better at it," he said of the danger, "because they're going to need it more in the future."

The number of attacks on prosecutors, judges and senior law enforcement officers in the U.S. has spiked in the past three years, according to Glenn McGovern, an investigator with the Santa Clara County, Calif., District Attorney's Office who tracks such cases.

But they're still rare. McLelland is the 13th prosecutor in the U.S. that the National Association of District Attorneys has recorded killed since the organization began keeping track in the 1960s.

For about a month after Hasse's slaying, sheriff's deputies were parked in the district attorney's driveway, said Sam Rosander, a McLelland neighbor.

The FBI and the Texas Rangers joined the investigation into the McLellands' deaths.

McLelland and his wife, Cynthia, were the parents of two daughters and three sons. One son is a police officer in Dallas. The couple had moved into the home a few years ago, Rozell said.

"Real friendly, became part of our community quickly," Rozell said. "They were a really pleasant happy couple."

High court poised to upend civil rights policies

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Has the nation lived down its history of racism and should the law become colorblind?

Addressing two pivotal legal issues, one on affirmative action and a second on voting rights, a divided Supreme Court is poised to answer those questions.

In one case, the issue is whether race preferences in university admissions undermine equal opportunity more than they promote the benefits of racial diversity. Just this past week, justices signaled their interest in scrutinizing affirmative action very intensely, expanding their review as well to a Michigan law passed by voters that bars "preferential treatment" to students based on race. Separately in a second case, the court must decide whether race relations ? in the South, particularly ? have improved to the point that federal laws protecting minority voting rights are no longer warranted.

The questions are apt as the United States closes in on a demographic tipping point, when nonwhites will become a majority of the nation's population for the first time. That dramatic shift is expected to be reached within the next generation, and how the Supreme Court rules could go a long way in determining what civil rights and equality mean in an America long divided by race.

The court's five conservative justices seem ready to declare a new post-racial moment, pointing to increased levels of voter registration and turnout among blacks to show that the South has changed. Lower federal courts just in the past year had seen things differently, blunting voter ID laws and other election restrictions passed by GOP-controlled legislatures in South Carolina, Texas and Florida, which they saw as discriminatory.

"Whenever a society adopts racial entitlements, it is very difficult to get out of them through the normal political processes," Justice Antonin Scalia said in oral arguments earlier this year, suggesting that it was the high court's responsibility to overturn voting protections overwhelmingly passed by Congress in 2006.

The legal meanings of "equality," ''racism" and "discrimination" have been in flux since at least 1883, when justices struck down a federal anti-discrimination law, calling it an unfair racial advantage for former black slaves. Today, justices face the question of whether the nation has reached equality by a 1960s definition or some new standard.

By some demographic measures, America has reached a new era. But the latest census data and polling from The Associated Press also show race and class disparities that persist.

EDITOR'S NOTE _ "America at the Tipping Point: The Changing Face of a Nation" is an occasional series examining the cultural mosaic of the U.S. and its historic shift to a majority-minority nation.

Beckham relishing chance to play against Barcelona

PARIS (AP) ? David Beckham says he feels fit enough to start the biggest game in Paris Saint-Germain's recent history when the club takes on Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal on Tuesday.

PSG has not played in the quarterfinals of the competition since 1995, when a 19-year-old Beckham was just breaking into the Manchester United team. That year PSG beat Barca in the quarterfinals.

After joining the French leader in January, Beckham has shown he can keep the pace at age 37. He made an impact as a substitute in Friday night's 1-0 home win against Montpellier, which moved PSG provisionally eight points ahead in the league.

Ouya hits retailers June 4 for $99.99

We knew the month, and now we know the day: The much-hyped, Android-based Ouya gaming console will be available at retailers on June 4 for $99.99.

The crowdsourced success story raised millions on Kickstarter in July 2012, and since then has attracted much attention as a potential dark horse in the console wars.

Of course, no one is going to be playing the latest AAA title on the modestly spec'ed Ouya, but indie, retro and casual games likely will populate it by the thousand. It will ship with a number of original games, as well as working emulators for several old consoles. And all games are free to try ? one of the console's big selling points.

The $99.99 gets you the console itself and a wireless controller, but if you want to play with a friend you'll have to shell out another $49.99 for an extra controller ? at least until the inevitable cheap alternatives come out.

You'll be able to pick it up at Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, Target or at Ouya's own site. In the meantime, the console's Kickstarter backers should be getting their unit over the next week or so, and pre-orders will ship after that.

Hulk Hogan $100M sex tape lawsuit to Fla. court

    Gerardo Mora / Getty Images

    Terry "Hulk Hogan" Bollea.

By Eriq Gardner, The Hollywood Reporter

In wrestling parlance, Hulk Hogan has just prevailed into pushing Gawker into a more favorable ring to fight a $100 million lawsuit over his leaked sex tape.

On Wednesday, a judge determined that Gawker's attempt to remove Hogan's lawsuit from Florida state court into a federal courtroom was improper. Hogan now has a chance to show how his privacy was invaded before a hometown judge.

To recap, Gawker posted a short excerpt in October of a a 30-minute Hulk Hogan sex tape as well as an essay by A.J. Daulerio that muses about how "we love to watch famous people have sex."

PHOTOS: '80s Action Stars: Where are they now?

Hogan (born Terry Bollea) then sued, alleging a host of legal violations including invasion of his privacy, publication of private facts, misappropriation of his publicity rights and infliction of emotional distress. The former professional wrestler and reality TV star then added a copyright claim in an attempt to score an injunction, but a judge denied the effort because Hogan had failed to demonstrate an immediate and irreparable injury.

Bad judge, Hogan might have thought, willing to defer to the First Amendment so quickly. In response, Hogan, represented by attorney Charles Harder, decided it might be better to find a new judge.

The federal lawsuit was dropped, and a state lawsuit was filed -- this time joining Gawker as a defendant with Heather Clem, his partner in the video who is alleged to have had a role in leaking it.

Gawker then removed the lawsuit back to federal court and blasted Hogan's attorneys for a maneuver "so egregious as to constitute fraudulent joinder."

Hulk Hogan Turns on President Obama on Fox News, Dismisses '9-9-9' Plan

It turns out that Gawker executed the wrong move. On Wednesday, Judge James Whittemore agreed to grant Hogan's motion to remand the case back to state court. Here's the full ruling.

The judge rejects Gawker's arguments that Hogan can't bring a viable claim against Clem because the statute of limitations had expired on when they had sex on tape. "While the date of recording appears on the face of the First Amended Complaint, there are no allegations concerning the date of Heather Clem's alleged publication that would enable an evaluation of the statute of limitations at this stage," writes the judge.

And the judge sees enough commonality in Hogan's claims against Gawker and Clem that he feels the two were properly joined. Citing things like the sex video's chain of custody, the judge says, "The claims against Heather Clem and Gawker are 'logically related' and rest on the same set of operative facts -- namely, the recording and publication of the video."

Gawker was also unsuccessful in arguing that federal law questions existed in the case that would make it more natural in a federal court. The website couldn't, for example, show that Hogan's privacy claims raised constitutional questions nor that Hogan's claims were preempted by federal copyright law. The judge determines that "even though Bollea seeks to regulate and control the distribution and display of the video," his privacy claims require "proof of separate elements," which makes them "qualitatively different from a copyright infringement action."

Therefore, the case goes back to a Florida state court. There, Gawker can continue to raise its defense that that the information it published was newsworthy and protected by the First Amendment. The website still stands a good chance of ultimately prevailing. But the ruling this week likely means that Gawker won't be scoring any quick pin in the battle and will be fighting on turf that's a whole lot less certain and comfortable.

North Korea readies rockets after U.S. show of force

SEOUL/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - North Korea put its missile units on standby on Friday to attack U.S. military bases in South Korea and the Pacific, after the United States flew two nuclear-capable stealth bombers over the Korean peninsula in a rare show of force. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un signed off on the order at a midnight meeting of top generals and "judged the time has come to settle accounts with the U.S. imperialists in view of the prevailing situation", the official KCNA news agency said.

Attempt to end Italy crisis stalls, president mulls next move

ROME (Reuters) - Center-left leader Pier Luigi Bersani has failed in his attempt to find a way out of Italy's political deadlock and President Giorgio Napolitano will now seek another solution, the president's palace said on Thursday. Bersani reported back to Napolitano on Thursday night after being given a mandate almost a week ago to see if he could muster enough support to form a government after the inconclusive election in February.

Iran, North Korea, Syria block U.N. arms trade treaty

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Iran, Syria and North Korea on Friday prevented the adoption of the first international treaty to regulate the $70 billion global conventional arms trade, complaining that it was flawed and failed to ban weapons sales to rebel groups. To get around the blockade, British U.N. Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant sent the draft treaty to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and asked him on behalf of Mexico, Australia and a number of others to put it to a swift vote in the General Assembly.

U.S. debates how severely to penalize Russia in human rights spat

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In a controversy underscoring continued stresses in U.S.-Russia relations, Obama administration officials are debating how many Russian officials to ban from the United States under a new law meant to penalize Moscow for alleged human rights abuses. The debate's outcome, expected in about two weeks, is likely to illustrate how President Barack Obama will handle what critics say is a crackdown on dissent in Russia and set the tone for Washington-Moscow relations in the president's second term.

Mortar kills 15 at Damascus University, Syria says

BEIRUT/ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Fifteen Syrian students were killed when rebel mortar shells hit a Damascus University canteen on Thursday, state-run news agency SANA said, as attacks intensified in the center of the capital. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition monitoring group, said a mortar killed 13 people at the university, without saying who fired the bombs.

South Sudan says 150 killed in battle with rebels

JUBA (Reuters) - More than 150 people have been killed in a battle between South Sudan's army and insurgents in the eastern Jonglei state, officials said on Thursday. The African country's army earlier this month launched an offensive against rebels led by David Yau Yau in Jonglei where the government hopes to search for oil with the help of France's Total.

Kenyatta apologizes for judges gaffe before Kenya poll ruling

NAIROBI (Reuters) - Kenya's president-elect, whose victory is being challenged in the Supreme Court, apologized on Thursday for seeming to dismiss the judges as "some six people" who will "decide something or other". Uhuru Kenyatta, who also faces trial at the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity over post-election violence five years ago, made the remarks - which went viral on social media - while consulting allies at a resort.

Beleaguered Hollande to reach out to nation on TV

PARIS (Reuters) - With his approval ratings and most of his economic pledges in tatters, French President Francois Hollande will try to convince a disillusioned nation on television on Thursday to keep faith in him to restore the economy to health. Hollande will be grilled in a 45-minute interview on France 2 television, his first such appearance in several months, in a studio whose backdrop and lighting have been prepared by his media team to create a somber mood.

U.S. nominates Breedlove as top NATO commander

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama nominated U.S. Air Force General Philip Breedlove on Thursday to become NATO's top military commander, a key role as NATO aims to wind down an 11-year-old combat mission in Afghanistan that has tested the resolve of allies. Breedlove, whose nomination was widely expected and endorsed by ambassadors from the 28 NATO allies, would succeed Admiral James Stavridis as NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe. His appointment requires U.S. Senate confirmation.

Analysis: Gay marriage rights may carry bigger U.S. tax burden for some

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - If the U.S. Supreme Court strikes down a federal law defining marriage as between a man and woman, the newfound rights for gay married couples may bear something not so welcome - a bigger tax burden. That's because with equality, gay couples will face the same tax woes of many heterosexual couples with similar incomes, including the tax hit known in America as the marriage penalty.

Debt: The Other Four Letter ?D? Word - Student Doctor Network

    By Andrew and Christy Crisologo

Many medical students have pushed student loans into the closet of their minds while they are in school. This monster in the closet, unfortunately, is not imaginary like the one you may have feared as a child. Doctors often graduate with debt not only from medical school, but with loans from undergraduate education and other graduate schooling as well. Even though medical students can borrow upwards of $40,000 per year, it can be easy to let loans become nothing more than an afterthought. Debt upon graduation should not scare or dissuade prospective students from pursuing medical school, but since the ability to pay for school out of pocket is becoming increasingly rare, students present and future should be informed on the financial responsibility that comes with medical education.

So how much debt is included in this responsibility? According to the American Medical Association (AMA), graduates of public allopathic medical schools accrue an average of $162,000 in loans, while graduates of private medical schools accrue a staggering $205,674. The American Association of Colleges and Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) reports that the average graduate of public and private osteopathic medical schools is even higher ($184,545 and $210,679 respectively). These numbers do not include debt incurred from education prior to enrollment in medical school.

There are currently two main types of federal loans available to medical students: Unsubsidized Stafford Loans and GradPLUS Loans. Stafford Loans are awarded based on financial need shown when a student files the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Medical students can borrow up to $40,500 in Stafford Loans per year at an annual interest rate of 6.8%. GradPLUS loans are similar to private bank loans, but the U.S. Department of Education is the lender. Students with no adverse credit history may borrow up to the cost of school attendance (which is determined by the school and includes cost of living expenses in addition to tuition), minus any other financial aid received, at an interest rate of 7.9%.

These annual percentage rates, which seem small, can quickly add thousands of dollars in interest to a loan balance. Let?s say you attend a public allopathic medical school, and you graduate with the average $162,000 in debt. All your loans build interest at the Stafford Loan?s rate of 6.8%. According to the loan calculator at finaid.org, paying off your loans in ten years will require a monthly payment of $1,864. You will end up paying a total of $223,716.23 over that ten year period. The interest, $61,716, is nearly forty percent of the amount originally borrowed. If you contribute finaid.org?s suggested ten percent of your gross income toward debt reduction, you would need to make an annual salary of nearly $224,000 to pay off your loans in ten years. Paying it off on a lower salary is certainly possible, but will require careful budgeting.

US medical students have not always accrued this amount of debt. And in fact, the average amount of debt is increasing. The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) reviewed the debt of medical school graduates from 1978 to 2011 and found a disturbing trend. Adjusting for inflation (in 2011 dollars), the mean education debt has tripled since 1978. Additionally, the four-year cost of attendance increased at twice the rate of inflation from 1998 to 2011.

However, a close look at debt patterns shows a break in the upward trend. Adjusted for inflation, the average debt load has not increased since 2009; in fact, it dropped an average of $2,700 per graduate between 2009 and 2011. What caused this slowdown in the debt rocket? While the exact cause has not yet been fully identified, the AAMC and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) point to a change in interest rates rather than any significant change in the amount of money borrowed. The Stafford Loan interest rate switched from a variable interest rate to a fixed rate of 6.8% in 2006. Debt could be dropping three years later because graduating medical students at that point had a majority of their loans at this new fixed rate of interest. Unfortunately, this downward trend is not expected to continue, since Subsidized Stafford Loans, which do not begin accruing interest until the borrower graduates or stops attending school, ceased to exist for graduate students as of July 1, 2012. When a student with no subsidized loans graduates, he or she will have accrued over $6,000 more in interest than those who received subsidized loans each year they borrowed.

The increasing debt rate could also affect a newly-minted physician?s specialty of choice, potentially leading to a decrease in primary care doctors. It would be much easier to pay off debt as a plastic surgeon making $350,000 per year than a primary care physician making $180,000 per year. An article published by the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine did not find a clear correlation overall between a medical student?s debt burden and their career plans. However, the article noted that students from middle income families were less likely to plan for a career in primary care as their debt level increased.

Today?s aspiring medical students face many financial uncertainties. The unknown affects of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA, more commonly known as Obamacare) and the absence of Subsidized Stafford Loans are two variables that previous students did not encounter. Still, most students and graduates find education debt to be an acceptable investment in their future. The reality of debt does not need to be a deterrent to those seeking a medical career, but students should be aware that the long and arduous road of medicine is not just made of long sleepless nights of study, but many years of financial discipline as well.

Movie review: Interesting characters meet in 'Like Someone in Love ...

Akiko (Rin Takanashi), a call girl who takes on a special client, in Abbas Kiarostami's drama "Like Someone in Love." Courtesy Eurospace/Sundance Selects

Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami has made such great movies ? including the masterful "A Taste of Cherry" and the emotional "Certified Copy" ? that one shouldn?t get upset when he makes a merely good one, as "Like Someone in Love" is.

It begins in a Tokyo nightclub as a call girl, Akiko (Rin Takanashi), reluctantly gets her assignment for the night: a widowed literary scholar, Takashi (Tadashi Okuno), who?s looking for companionship. When Akiko arrives at Takashi?s apartment, a sexual arrangement does not ensue. Instead, Takashi takes a grandfatherly interest in the girl, driving her to her college class the next morning and encountering her abusive and unstable boyfriend (Ryo Kase, from "Letters From Iwo Jima").

    ?

    HHH

    ?Like Someone in Love?

Opens Friday, March 29, at the Tower Theatre; not rated, but probably R for sexual content, language and some violence; in Japanese with subtitles; 109 minutes.

Kiarostami lets the moments between Akiko and Takashi unfold naturally, as these characters from different worlds find common bonds. The relationship builds, but toward the end there?s the nagging sense that it won?t build to much.

Nuclear-capable stealth bombers sent to S. Korea

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? The U.S military says two nuclear-capable B-2 bombers have completed a training mission in South Korea amid threats from North Korea that include nuclear strikes on Washington and Seoul.

The statement Thursday by U.S. Forces Korea is an unusual confirmation. It follows an earlier U.S. announcement that nuclear-capable B-52 bombers participated in ongoing U.S.-South Korean military drills.

The U.S. says the B-2 stealth bombers flew from a U.S. air base and dropped munitions on a South Korean island range before returning home.

The announcement will likely draw a strong response from Pyongyang. North Korea sees the military drills as part of a U.S. plot to invade and becomes particularly upset about U.S. nuclear activities in the region.

Washington and Seoul say they the annual drills are routine and defensive.

FDA approves new multiple sclerosis capsules

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday it approved a new drug from Biogen Idec to control multiple sclerosis in adults with hard-to-treat forms of the disease.

The twice-a-day capsules, called Tecfidera, offer a new option for multiple sclerosis, a debilitating disease in which the body attacks its own nervous system. Cambridge, Mass.-based Biogen Idec already sells two other drugs for the disease, but both require injections.

There is no cure for multiple sclerosis and most patients experience relapses of symptoms, including loss of balance, weakness in arms and legs, and blurred vision. Over time patients usually become weaker and less coordinated. More than 2 million people worldwide have the disease, with about 400,000 of them in the U.S., according to Biogen.

The FDA said it approved Tecfidera based on two studies showing patients taking the drug had fewer relapses than patients taking a dummy pill.

The approval gives Biogen a new product in an increasingly crowded field of multiple sclerosis drugs.

The biotech drugmaker already sells the once-a-week multiple sclerosis injection Avonex. It also markets the once-a-month injection Tysabri through a partnership with Elan Corp. PLC of Ireland. However, Tysabri's severe side effects have curtailed its use.

Tecfidera is designed to be taken orally, which could make it a preferred option for patients and doctors.

A Biogen executive said Wednesday that its three drugs would be used to treat different groups of patients.

"Multiple sclerosis is a reasonably complex disease and we think there are a lot of needs out there," said Tony Kingsely, a vice president at Biogen. "By having three drugs out there I think we can address a lot of those needs."

Kinglsey said the company will announce the pricing of the drug when it begins shipping in the next week.

Novartis launched the first pill-based multiple sclerosis drug, Gilenya, in March 2011. Sanofi won FDA approval for a second pill, its drug Aubagio, last September.

The top-selling drug for the disease worldwide is Copaxone, which is made by Teva Pharmaceutical Industries. That injection had sales of nearly $4 billion last year, according to Teva's latest financial report.

Avonex and Tysabri had annual sales of $2.7 billion and $1.5 billion in 2011, the most recent year for which Biogen has reported annual sales.

Biogen Idec Inc. shares rose $5.59, or 3.2 percent, to close Wednesday at $182.68.

Teens' struggles with peers forecast long-term adult relationships

Mar. 28, 2013 ? Teenagers' struggles to connect with their peers in the early adolescent years while not getting swept along by negative peer influences predict their capacity to form strong friendships and avoid serious problems even ten years later. Those are the conclusions of a new longitudinal study by researchers at the University of Virginia that appears in the journal Child Development.

"Overall, we found that teens face a high-wire act with their peers," explains Joseph P. Allen, Hugh P. Kelly Distinguished Professor at the University of Virginia, who led the study. "They need to establish strong, positive connections with them while at the same time establishing independence in resisting deviant peer influences. Those who don't manage this have significant problems as much as a decade later."

Researchers followed about 150 teens over a 10-year period (starting at age 13 and continuing to 23) to learn about the long-term effects of their peer struggles early in adolescence. They gathered information from multiple sources -- the teens themselves, their parents and peers, and by observing teens' later interactions with romantic partners. The teens comprised a racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse group.

Teens who had trouble connecting well with their peers in early adolescence had difficulty establishing close friendships in young adulthood. Teens who didn't connect well at 13 also had more difficulty managing disagreements in romantic relationships as adults.

Teens who had trouble establishing some autonomy and independence with peers (especially with respect to minor forms of deviance such as shoplifting and vandalism) were found to be at higher risk for problems with alcohol and substance use, and for illegal behavior, almost a decade later.

Conversely, teens who were seen as desirable companions -- those deemed empathetic, able to see things from different perspectives and control their impulses, and having a good sense of humor -- were more likely to have positive relationships in young adulthood.

Teens who were able to establish some autonomy vis a vis peers' influences were more likely to avoid problematic behavior in young adulthood, with teens who showed they were able to think for themselves in the face of negative peer influences using less alcohol as early adults and having fewer problems with alcohol and substance abuse as young adults. But teens who were seen as desirable companions were more likely to have higher levels of alcohol use in early adulthood and future problems associated with alcohol and substance use.

"The findings make it clear that establishing social competence in adolescence and early adulthood is not a straightforward process, but involves negotiating challenging and at times conflicting goals between peer acceptance and autonomy with regard to negative peer influences," Allen notes.

"Teaching teens how to stand up for themselves in ways that preserve and deepen relationships -- to become their own persons while still connecting to others -- is a core task of social development that parents, teachers, and others can all work to promote," adds Allen.

Teens who managed both of these goals simultaneously -- connecting with peers while retaining their autonomy -- were rated by their parents as being most competent overall by age 23. "There is a positive pathway through the peer jungle of early adolescence," says Allen, "but it is a tricky one for many teens to find and traverse."

PFT: Did RGIII take veiled shot at Shanahan?

Divisional Playoffs - Seattle Seahawks v Atlanta FalconsGetty Images

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin doesn?t have much faith in the read-zone option being anything more than another passing fad.

Tomlin called the offensive scheme the ?flavor of the month? in the league and feels its success could very much go the way of the Wildcat once defenses have a chance to adjust and figure it out.

?We look forward to stopping it,? Tomlin said. ?We look forward to eliminating it.?

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is one of a handful of quarterbacks to have been able to incorporate the read-zone concepts and see success. San Francisco?s Colin Kaepernick, Washington?s Robert Griffin III and Carolina?s Cam Newton have also benefited from adding the elements to their offenses.

But Wilson has no intention of just being the ?flavor of the month.? He believes that he, Kaepernick and other quarterbacks that can run are getting unfairly put into a box as ?running quarterbacks? just because they have the ability to run and not being given the credit for their ability to throw the ball or run an offense.

?It doesn?t matter what style of offense, I?m ready to play any time, anywhere, anyplace. I just want to play football. Some people try to take away from our ability to throw the football because we can run. But I think it just adds another dimension to what we do,? Wilson said, via Eric Williams of the?Tacoma News Tribune.

?To be honest with you, people try to take away from the ability that guys have in terms of what Colin Kaepernick and other guys like him can do, for whatever reason, because they?re young, or they?re different,? Wilson added. ?But I think it brings excitement to the game. It brings a challenge to the defense.?

Seattle doesn?t solely rely on the read-zone instead using it only as a complement to their normal offense. Wilson matched Peyton Manning?s record for most touchdown passes by a rookie with 26 last year and had a 20-0 touchdown to interception ratio in the opponent?s red zone. That level of success can?t solely be written off as a byproduct of one offensive scheme alone.

Wilson, Kaepernick and Griffin all proved last season they have the ability to successfully work a passing game in addition to their ability to run when called upon. The thought they will be rendered ineffective by adjustments defenses make to solve the read-zone elements of their offenses seem to be far-fetched.
