Harrity, Cerullo Lead Princeton Squash Into Individual Championships

DRAWS: POOL (Men's A) l RAMSAY (Women's A) l MOLLOY (Men's B) l HOLLERAN (Women's B)

By virtue of victories over both 2012 individual finalists in the last month, Princeton senior Todd Harrity has earned the No. 1 seed in this weekend's CSA individual championships. Both he and women's captain Julie Cerullo will lead a cast 15 Princeton squash players into this weekend's competition at Trinity College.

The CSA individual championships will be held March 1-3 at Trinity, with the majority of play to take place over the first two days. The national championship matches will take place on Sunday, with the men's final starting at 12 and the women's final starting at 1.

POOL CUP (Men's A)

Harrity, the 2011 CSA national champion, defeated Columbia's Ramit Tandon in the regular season finale to help Princeton win the 2013 Ivy League title. Tandon had defeated Harrity twice last season, including in the CSA semifinal. If form holds, those two could meet again in the semifinal round this year, as Tandon is the fourth seed.

Harrity grabbed the first seed by virtue of his 3-1 win over reigning champion and formerly unbeaten Ali Farag of Harvard in las weekend's team semifinal match. Farag, who had been 2-0 against Harrity in his career, is the second seed, and could face St. Lawrence freshman Amr Khaled Khalifa in the semifinal; Khalifa was undefeated this season, though he didn't face Harrity or Farag.

A trio of Princeton players will look to break up that semifinal duo, including sophomore All-Americas Samuel Kang and Tyler Osborne. Kang opens play with former Harvard No. 1 Gary Power, and would likely face current No. 1 Farag in the second round if he can advance. Osborne will take on Trinity No. 4 Karan Malik in the first round, and could see former All-America Chris Hanson of Dartmouth in the second round.

Junior Dylan Ward will make his Potter Cup debut with a tough match against Harvard No. 2 Brandon McLaughlin, who split a pair of matches this season with Kang. If Ward could pull the upset, he would be rewarded with a second-round match against Khalifa.

RAMSAY CUP (Women's A)

Four members of the Ivy League champion Princeton women's team are entered into the Ramsay Cup to compete for All-America honors and to see if anybody can pull a historic upset of Harvard's Amanda Sobhy.

Cerullo, a two-time semifinalist, could get that opportunity in the semifinal round once again if she can navigate through her first three matches. The three-time All-America opens play against Trinity's Robyn Hodgson, and then would face either teammate Rachel Leizman or Stanford's Kerrie Sample. Leizman has been a strong presence at the No. 4 spot this season, though she will be challenged by the No. 2 at Stanford.

On the bottom half of the draw, junior All-America Libby Eyre will open play against Penn's Pia Trikha, and could find herself in an intriguing second-round match against Stanford No. 1 Pamela Chua, who earned the Richey Award this season.

Sophomore Nicole Bunyan will take on Yale's Shihui Mao in another first-round match. Those two met in the regular season, with Mao winning a five-game marathon 12-10 in the fifth. The winner would likely get 2011 national champion Millie Tomlinson in the second round.

MOLLOY CUP (Men's B)

Princeton has three entrants into the 'B' draw, and two have received first-round byes. Freshman Vivek Donodia and sophomore David Hoffman will both have Friday morning off, and will return in the afternoon for Round of 32 matches.

The first Princeton player in competition for the Molloy Cup is freshman Michael LeBlanc, who will take on Drexel's Ibrahim Bakir. During the regular season matchup with Princeton, Bakir played No. 1 for Drexel and lost in three games to Harrity.

HOLLERAN CUP (Women's B)

The Princeton women placed four players in the 'B' draw, and each one of them received first-round byes. Juniors Alex Sawin and Lexi Saunders, sophomore Hallie Dewey and freshman Tara Harrington will all compete Friday afternoon against the winners of opening-round matches.

Business spending plans gauge hits 13-month high

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A gauge of planned U.S. business spending recorded its largest increase in more than a year in January, suggesting growing confidence in the durability of the economic recovery.

The case for the economy's resilience was further bolstered by another report on Wednesday showing that contracts to buy previously owned homes approached a near three-year high last month. Housing is expected to underpin growth this year.

Non-defense capital goods orders excluding aircraft, a closely watched proxy for business spending plans, jumped 6.3 percent, the biggest gain since December 2011. These so-called core capital goods orders had slipped 0.3 percent in December.

"The encouraging tone of this report suggests that the business sector is beginning to feel sufficiently confident about the improving economic outlook to commit to investment activity," said Millan Mulraine, a senior economist at TD Securities in New York.

In a separate report, the National Association of Realtors said its pending home sales index increased 4.5 percent to its highest since April 2010, just before a home-buyer tax credit expired.

The rise in signed purchase contracts, which become sales after a month or two, added to data such as building permits and house prices that have suggested a decisive turnaround in the housing market.

Home building added to growth last year for the first time since 2005 and economists expect another contribution this year.

Still, the reports are unlikely to change the Federal Reserve's very easy monetary policy stance. Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke, testifying before Congress for a second straight day, pointed to the pick-up in housing as a sign the U.S. central bank's aggressive easing of monetary policy is gaining traction.

However, he signaled a willingness to press forward with efforts to spur an even stronger recovery and lower the jobless rate, which remains at a lofty 7.9 percent.

Stocks on Wall Street ended more than 1 percent higher on the data and Bernanke's comments, with the Standard & Poor's 500 posting its best daily percentage gain since January 2. The U.S. dollar weakened against a basket of currencies, while prices for U.S. government debt fell.

FACTORY ACTIVITY COOLING

Although shipments of core capital goods, used to calculate equipment and software spending in the government's measures of gross domestic product, fell last month, economists were little worried.

"The balance between orders and shipments of capital goods is looking healthier as backlogs of core capital goods orders rose for the first time in eight months," said John Ryding, chief economist at RDQ Economics in New York.

"Our take is that manufacturing activity - especially in the capital goods area - is bouncing back after cautious behavior ahead of the fiscal cliff."

U.S. factory activity, which helped lift the economy from recession, has cooled in recent months, held back by sluggish domestic demand, tighter fiscal policy in Washington and slowing global growth.

While business investment plans looked strong, the report showed that overall orders for durable goods - items ranging from toasters to aircraft that are meant to last three years or more - tumbled 5.2 percent as demand for civilian and defense aircraft collapsed. It was the first drop since August.

Orders for civilian aircraft, which are very volatile and which tend to fall at the start of the year, dived 34 percent.

Boeing received orders for only 2 aircraft, down from 183 in December. Economists said the decline was probably not related to the grounding of Boeing's 787 Dreamliners after problems with overheating batteries.

"I haven't heard any reports about airlines canceling their orders. This could be a one-month lull rather than something greater," said Stephen Stanley, chief economist at Pierpont Securities in Stamford, Connecticut.

Defense aircraft orders plunged 63.8 percent after soaring 58.5 percent in December, likely as orders were pushed forward ahead of $85 billion in government-wide spending cuts set to kick in on Friday.

Overall defense capital goods orders plummeted 69.5 percent in January, the sharpest fall since July 2000.

But durable goods orders excluding transportation increased 1.9 percent last month, also the largest gain since December 2011, after increasing 1 percent in December. That was a sign factory activity continues to plod along.

New W3C Group Focuses on Automotive Web Platforms and ...

W3CThe World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), an international community that develops web standards, has announced the launch of the new ?Automotive and Web Platform Business Group? which will create web technology specifications for the automotive industry starting with a Vehicle Data API Specification.

There has been a rush in the creation of connected car applications and as ProgrammableWeb?s Greg Bates recently reported, car companies including Ford, GM, Toyota and BMW are racing to create vehicle-controlled app platforms and marketplaces.

The Automotive and Web Platform Business Group will focus on helping the automotive industry adopt web technologies and platforms as well as understanding W3C web specifications and standards. Specific issues related to the automobile industry will also be addressed such as reduction of driver distractions and driver safety. In the W3C press release, Roger C. Lanctot, Associate Director in the Global Automotive Practice at Strategy Analytics, states that:

?The W3C?s API initiative arrives just as OEMs are laying the groundwork to bring the browser into the car via multiple means. Car makers will be looking to the W3C to help identify best practices for over the air software updates and security and the launch of the new Business Group will provide the ideal forum for those conversations.?

Defining a Vehicle Data API Specification is the first priority of the group and will provide guidelines as to the types of vehicle data that should be accessible using a web API(s). There is a wide range of data that could be made accessible to app developers via web APIs such as vehicle make, model and year, vehicle conditions such as navigation, speed, climate and more. Diana Cheng, Web and Social Media Expert, Internet Standards, R&D at Vodafone Group states for the press release:

?Standardization of a Vehicle API will boost interoperability regardless of manufacturers and enrich automotive applications with vehicle data, which would increase security and user control. We believe the W3C is the right organization to ensure correct design and sandboxing of such an API so that it does not interfere with other vehicle functions; they have already been doing this for years, i.e. standardizing a large number of Web APIs that run securely in the browser?s runtime. We look forward to starting collaboration with other industry players through this business group.?

The concept of ?car as a platform? has actually been around for several years. However, as reported by ProgrammableWeb Editor Adam DuVander, the recent launch of the OnStar API by GM seems to have sparked a ?car as a platform? war. Only time will tell whether the ?car as a platform? will be embraced by developers and ultimately car consumers.

Stem cell line could also advance research into liver cancers, cystic fibrosis

Chronic or acute, liver failure can be deadly. Toxins take over, the skin turns yellow and higher brain function slows.

"There is no effective therapy at the moment to deal with the toxins that build up in your body," said Neil Talbot, a Research Animal Scientist for the USDA Agricultural Research Service. "Their only option now is to transplant a liver."

Talbot thinks a line of special liver cells could change that. In an interview with the American Society of Animal Science, he discussed how a line of pig liver cells called PICM-19 could perform many of the same functions as a human liver.

In 1991, Talbot created PICM-19 from the cells of an 8-day-old pig embryo. The cell line is significant because it is "immortal," meaning the cells can divide an infinite number of times. Many immortal cells lines continue dividing because they are derived from cancer cells; however, PICM-19 cells are derived from epiblast cells, the embryonic stem cells that form in the early stages of embryo development.

This immortal cell line has helped Talbot study how cells differentiate. Cells from the PICM-19 lines naturally differentiate into bile duct cells or hepatocytes. Hepatocytes do the bulk of the work in a liver. Hepatocytes form and secrete bile, store glycogen, control blood glucose, process vitamin D, and metabolize cholesterol and fat.

"The PICM- 19 cells are the cells that really do all the metabolic functions of the liver," said Talbot.

Hepatocytes also "scrub" toxins from the blood. Talbot said PICM-19 cells could do the same thing inside an artificial liver. There have already been several in vitro tests of artificial liver devices, and the ARS scientists are working on ways to grow the PICM-19 cells without needing "feeder cells." Feeder cells are mouse cells that hold PICM-19 cells in place and provide important molecules for PICM-19 cell growth and maintenance.

Artificial livers are still in development, but Talbot pointed out other applications for PICM-19 cells. Talbot and fellow scientists have used PICM-19 to study malaria, toxoplasmosis and hepatitis viruses. Researchers could also use the cells to study certain cancers of the liver or investigate the changes in the bile duct associated with cystic fibrosis.

Talbot recommends future studies on how PICM-19 cells respond to selective pressures. He said scientists could select for more efficient liver cells by exposing PICM-19 cells to toxins in culture.

"A lot of cells would die, but the survivors would really be tough," Talbot said.

Those tougher cells could make artificial liver devices more effective. Scientists could also use genetic modification to prompt PICM-19 cells to behave like other cells in the body.

"Maybe we want to enable it to make insulin," Talbot said. "It will be like a pancreas."

With PICM-19 cells filling in for livers or other organs, the transplant list could get a lot shorter.

Tom Caperna, an ARS Research Biologist and collaborator with Talbot, presented their work on PICM-19 during the Growth and Development Symposium at the 2012 Joint Annual Meeting. The full symposium summary is titled "Growth and Development Symposium: Development, characterization, and use of a porcine epiblast-derived stem cell line: ARS-PICM-19." It can be read in full at journalofanimalscience.org.

Benitez says he'll leave Chelsea at end of season

By STEVE DOUGLAS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:28 p.m. ET Feb. 27, 2013

LONDON (AP) - Worn down by constant criticism by fans, Rafael Benitez announced Wednesday he will leave as Chelsea's manager at the end of the season.

Benitez made his decision public during an extraordinary post-match outburst in which he also took aim at the Premier League club's hierarchy.

The Spanish coach spoke during the news conference after the Blues won 2-0 at Middlesbrough and advanced to an FA Cup quarterfinal against Manchester United, saying his position had been untenable since he was appointed "interim manager" in November.

"I will leave at the end of the season - they don't need to waste time with me," said Benitez, referring to a section of fans who jeered him at Riverside Stadium.

Benitez was hired as the replacement for the fired Roberto di Matteo, and has never been accepted by a large section of Chelsea fans.

Many are still angry at Di Matteo's departure after he led the club to its first Champions League title last season. Others haven't forgiven Benitez for allegedly disparaging comments he made toward Chelsea earlier in his career while he managed Liverpool. Others don't like his style of soccer.

Benitez said some fans have had an "agenda" against him and made a passionate defense of his managerial record.

"I have been in charge in football for 26 years - I have won the Champions League, won the FIFA Club World Cup, the FA Cup, the Italian Super Cup, the Spanish league twice, nine trophies, all the trophies you can win at club level," he said. "A group of fans, they are not doing any favors for the team when they are singing and wasting time preparing banners. It's because someone made a mistake. They put my title (as) `interim manager.'

Ahead of the game, Benitez played down reports of a confrontation with players at a training session after Sunday's 2-0 loss at Manchester City. John Terry, dropped for the City match, was reported by British media to have been involved.

"I am the manager and I will be managing the team I like to manage - players and no names," Benitez said Wednesday. "I have proved in these three months that I want to win every single game ... If a group of fans continue their agenda ... they are not making any favors for the team.

"They should concentrate on supporting the team," he continued. "They put pressure on the players and don't create a good atmosphere at Stamford Bridge. They have to realize they rare making a big mistake. ... it would be much better to have a good atmosphere."

New Jersey lawmakers pass online gambling bill

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) ? New Jersey legislators gave final approval Tuesday to a bill legalizing gambling over the Internet, sending it to Gov. Chris Christie, who has indicated he will sign it quickly.

The state Assembly and Senate passed an updated version of the bill that Christie vetoed on Feb. 7, making the changes he asked for including setting a 10-year trial period for online betting, and raising the taxes on the Atlantic City casinos? online winnings.

Assuming Christie signs the bill ? he said last week he would do so quickly if the legislature made the changes he wanted ? New Jersey would become the third state in the nation to legalize gambling over the Internet. It also would represent the largest expansion of legalized gambling in New Jersey since the first casino began operating in Atlantic City in 1978.

Nevada and Delaware have passed laws legalizing Internet betting, which also is going on offshore, untaxed and unregulated.

?Finally, some good news for Atlantic City?s future,? said state Sen. Raymond Lesniak, one of the strongest proponents of online gambling. ?Internet gaming will give an immediate boost to the outlook for Atlantic City?s future, preventing the closing of at least one casino, and saving thousands of jobs. Now we can get to work making Atlantic City the Silicon Valley of Internet gaming by being the hub for other states to join.?

The idea is to help the struggling casinos by attracting new gamblers who are not now visiting the casinos. The comps, like free hotel rooms, show tickets, meals or other freebies, would be accrued from online play, but would have to be redeemed in person at a casino, presumably enticing a player to spend more money while there.

The bill will not take effect until the state Division of Gaming Enforcement sets a start date, sometime between three and nine months after the law is signed. Casino executives have estimated it could take six months to a year to get the system up and running.

It would allow the playing online, for money, of any game currently offered by Atlantic City?s 12 casinos; online poker is expected to be a particularly popular option.

Gamblers would have to set up online accounts with a particular casino, and could set daily limits on their play. They also would be subject to the same per-hand limits as gamblers physically present in the casino. Casino executives say final rules have to be approved by the gambling enforcement division, but they expect the state to require gamblers to have to appear in person at a casino to open their accounts and verify their age, identity and other personal information. Payouts could be made remotely to a credit card account or bank account when a player cashes out, if the state approves such an arrangement, the executives said.

They conceivably could even gamble through social media sites, as long as the sites worked with casinos who have an online gambling license, Lesniak said.

The casinos would utilize software programs that would, among other things, seek to verify that a person is at least 21 years old. Ted Friedman, CEO of Secure Trading, a Delaware Internet payment processor, said his firm?s software validates player information, including age, against multiple public and private databases.

It also uses authentication tools that will ask the player a series of multiple choice questions that only the specific player would know the answer to. Based on the identity checks and answers provided, an algorithm is run to determine the confidence level that the player is who they say they are and are of legal age.

The bill would allow gamblers in other states to place bets in New Jersey as long as regulators determine such activity is not prohibited by federal or any state?s law. It even has provisions for allowing people in other countries to play, although federal law would have to be changed before that could happen, Lesniak said.

The third time was the charm for online gambling in New Jersey. The legislature had passed two previous versions of the bill, only to see Christie veto them.

Christie vetoed New Jersey?s first attempt at Internet gambling in March 2011, citing concerns about its constitutionality and worrying about the proliferation of illegal back-room Internet betting parlors that would be difficult to find and prosecute. A second bill tried to address those concerns by providing hefty fines for anyone who runs or even advertises such a back-room betting parlor.

But Christie still wasn?t done objecting, noting in his Feb. 7 veto message that he had been torn over whether to expand gambling in New Jersey to such an extent. His two biggest requested changes were having Internet gambling reviewed by the state after 10 years to see how well it was working, and increasing the tax rate on the casinos? online winnings from 10 percent to 15 percent.

British Gas owner Centrica's annual earnings rise five percent

LONDON (Reuters) - British utility Centrica unveiled plans to invest more in its residential services business and North America after reporting a 5 percent rise in full-year earnings, in line with expectations.

Centrica, which owns Britain's biggest household energy supplier British Gas, said earnings per share (EPS) for the year to end December rose to 27.1 pence, compared with earnings of 27.4 pence per share according to a Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S poll of 21 analysts.

Centrica, which pulled out of plans to build new nuclear power stations in Britain with partner EDF last month, also announced the resignation of the head of British Gas, Phil Bentley, in a move which had previously been flagged.

Consumer confidence is up, but will they spend?

NEW YORK (AP) ? Americans are more confident in the economy than they have been in the past few months, but that doesn't mean they're willing to spend more money.

Consumer confidence rebounded in February, reversing three straight months of declines, as Americans get more used to the higher Social Security payroll tax, The Conference Board, a private research group said Tuesday.

But the rosier outlook follows major companies from Burger King to Wal-Mart that have cautioned in recent weeks that Americans are pulling back on their spending as they try to stomach their smaller paychecks since the tax rose by 2 percentage points last month.

Robert Zamora, who lives in Boston, says while he feels encouraged that the value of his home and his stock portfolio are rising, he's decided to spend less because of the higher payroll tax, which has reduced his monthly income by $250.

"There is no more discretionary money to go around for anything other than the basics," says Zamora, who works in web development for a financial services firm.

The way Americans feel about the economy has gone through peaks and valleys as they've tried to reconcile improving stock and housing markets with new economic challenges. In addition to the higher payroll tax, gas prices are rising and there are worries that lawmakers won't resolve a budget impasse that threatens to trigger $85 billion in spending cuts starting Friday.

The Conference Board's index is closely watched by economists because it attempts to keep a monthly pulse on how Americans are feeling about everything from their jobs to their incomes. That's important because when Americans feel good, they spend. And since consumer spending accounts for 70 percent of U.S. economic activity, the economy benefits greatly when Americans feel good about it.

The January reading shows that Americans are more confident, but still skittish. Confidence rose to 69.6, up from a revised 58.4 in January and the 60.5 analysts polled by research firm FactSet expected. That's the highest reading since November's of 71.5, but well below the 90 that indicates a healthy economy.

The Conference Board's survey, which was conducted from Feb. 1 through Feb. 14 on a sample of 2,300 shoppers, shows that Americans are particularly upbeat about their job and income prospects. But that's coming off gloomier numbers over the past three months. The number of people anticipating more jobs rose to 16.7 percent from 14.4 percent, while those expecting their incomes to increase rose to 15.7 percent from 13.5 percent.

"Consumers are feeling better, but they don't feel a whole lot better," says Mark Vitner, an economist at Wells Fargo.

There's no wonder Americans are torn between positivity and angst. There's a mix of good and bad economic news.

Stocks have roughly doubled since June 2009. And the job market, while still tough, also is rebounding: In January, employers added 157,000 jobs. Still, the unemployment rate rose to 7.9 percent from 7.8 percent in December.

But whether or not Americans open their wallets and pocketbooks may rely on a few economic wildcards. One of them is gas prices, which started to climb in mid-January. As of Tuesday, they are $3.78 per gallon, 40 cents higher than they were a month ago. If gas prices keep climbing, that could squeeze Americans, particularly those already living paycheck to paycheck.

And many economists worry that the budget fights in Washington could really hurt Americans' confidence. They worry that the impasse could persist for much of this year, and be drag on economic growth and Americans' willingness to spend.

Zamora, the Boston resident, certainly frets about how lawmakers are going to resolve the budget crisis.

"Nobody knows what the ripple effect will be," he says. "I don't want to be caught blowing in the wind."

DNS Issues - Web Hosting Talk

Last Friday, I transferred my website to a new host and updated my nameservers as usual.

Now, 3 days on and me along with 2 other users still cannot access the site. Me and one other still see the temporary "moving" page that I left on the old server to be displayed during the domain propagation and the other user gets a blank screen.

I can access the website just fine using a proxy or hotspot shield and without a proxy I can access my cPanel, however this is via my host's domain instead.

My domain is www.lcresponders.com, and my report from dnsstuff can be seen here:

http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools#dnsRep...sponders.com&&

Please advise me on how to correct this issue.
Thanks
-Tom

Hi there Net,
Thanks for your reply. I'm a little new to this side of the internet, so please bear with me. I've updated my name servers are godaddy, which is who my domain is registered with. Is that the only place where I need to do that?

Thanks again

Your nameservers are set properly at your registrar, but your DNS records are messed up. It works for me, but your intodns.com report is a disaster.

http://intodns.com/lcresponders.com

Edit your DNS zone file to agree with DNS at your registrar.

You need to correct the "NS records" within your DNS zone file

The problem is that the DNS manager seems to be hosted at my old host. How can I move it to my new one?
Thanks

Login to your domain registrar, then edit the nameserver settings to point to your new host.

What DNS manager is that? Without knowing which host is new and which is old it's hard to tell, but my guess is that the nameservers are set correctly at your registrar but not at the new host. If so you need to log into WHM at the new host and edit zone. You can use the host's domain or IP address to be sure that you're connecting to the "right" WHM.

(It wouldn't be a bad idea for the new host to fix the DNS errors on their nameserver domain too, but those are less of an issue).

My old host was:
www.nextgenhost.net
And my new is:
www.offshorewebspace.net

I logged into my old cPanel at nextgenhost and edited the DNS for my domain to point to my new host. This solved the problem but I want to fix this properly.

The new host also uses capable for the DNS managing.

cPanel? So you need to edit your zone in cPanel / WHM at offshorewebspace and change the NS records, which are currently set to nextgenhost.

Apologies, I meant cPanel. iPhone decided to help me out with spelling lol...

I can't seem to see where to edit my nameservers in the cPanel, the only thing that I can see is the "Advanced DNS zone editor" which I've screenshotted so you can take a look. As far as I can see, the settings are correct.

EDIT:
My account with nextgenhost (the previous host) is still active and this is where the DNS manager is. What happens if I cancel it? Will it help?

Are you server admin? If so yes it is, go to admin whm/cpanel => Advanced DNS zone editor => lcresponders.com and setup yor Arecord, ns record and etc.
If you are not, contact to DC and ask them to fix that.

Yes, if you can't see the NS records then I guess it means you don't have access to them through that panel (perhaps someone more familiar with cPanel can confirm) and the host will have to make the change for you.

No, you've changed the A records at the old host - that's keeping your site working for now. Get the new host's DNS fixed and wait at least 24 hours before canceling the old one.

Fast And Easy Weight Loss Tips That Work

All good plans start with a solid groundwork especially with weight loss. Include vital lifestyle changes that will help you eat better, get more exercise and improve your health. When you have the right information, you become unstoppable. The tips you learn here will give you a good start, and get you in the right mindset to implement smart changes in your lifestyle.

When beginning a new weight loss program, seek the advice of a dietician for the best results. Our bodies are all different, so you may not get the same results from one diet that someone else did. Seek outside help when trying to lose weight.

You can shed extra weight simply by walking up and down the stairs. As simple as it may seem, you are still burning calories that you would not have had you taken the elevator.

There are a number of popular diets that simply do not work alone. Therefore, it is important to join a gym to have a backup plan. Although a decrease in overall calories will help you lose weight or slow your weight gain, exercise will help you burn calories and increase your weight loss. Your ultimate goal should be to change your lifestyle so that you consume less calories than you burn.

Eating distracted is an open door to more pounds. If you ignore what you're putting in your mouth, you won't lose any weight. Be aware of the quantity that you are consuming at each sitting, and you are sure to find that you do not eat as much.

If you're going to eat nuts, eat nuts that come with the shell on. The reason for this is because it takes longer to consume shelled nuts, which will cause you to eat less.

Never take diet drugs without first consulting with a health care professional. Anyone with a heart condition, or taking other medicines, should not take most of the available diet pills. Consult your physician before taking any unproven product designed to help you lose weight, especially pills.

Reducing your intake of red meat can help with your weight loss efforts. Red meat contains a lot of cholesterol and saturated fat which is harmful to your heart. Switch out red meat for leaner cuts of meat such as turkey, tuna, chicken or other types of fish.

When you must choose between salad and soup at a restaurant, choose clear soup or a salad. Eating either, however, will have you eating less of your calorie-laden entree.

Do not become obsessed with the scale. If you're checking your weight on the scale every day to track the progress of your weight loss program, there's a chance that you won't see the results you were expecting and it can be upsetting. Exercising builds muscle, which is heavier than fat. The best way to judge whether or not your weight loss plan is working is to examine how well your clothing is now fitting.

Keeping a healthy weight is the key to your future health. The style of life that you have determines the success you will have. Change your habits and use all resources to keep on track to a healthier you. Instead of wondering what will happen, know what you want to do and do it.

Yum says to step up check on suppliers after China scare

BEIJING (Reuters) - Yum Brands Inc will tighten its monitoring of suppliers and improve testing of poultry as it aims to reverse a steep drop in business at its KFC restaurants in China after a chicken safety scare.

In a statement ahead of a media briefing in Beijing on Monday, the company also said it would look to improve its communications with the Chinese government and people in the wake of the scare.

Diners began avoiding Yum's nearly 5,300, mostly KFC, restaurants in December after news reports and government investigations in China focused on chemical residue found in a small portion of its chicken supply.

The company was not fined by China food safety authorities.

Toxic mice air drop: Dead poisoned mice to target Guam tree snakes

Toxic mice air drop: The US government is about target invasive brown tree snakes in Guam by bombing the island with dead mice laced with?acetaminophen, which is toxic to the reptiles.

By Eric Talmadge,?Associated Press / February 22, 2013

A Brown Tree Snake is held by a US Department of Agriculture wildlife specialist at Andersen Air Force Base on the island of Guam. The US government is planning to drop toxic mice from helicopters to battle the snakes, an invasive species that has decimated Guam's native bird population.

Dead mice laced with painkillers are about to rain down on?Guam's?jungle canopy. They are scientists' prescription for a headache that has caused the tiny U.S. territory misery for more than 60 years: the brown tree snake.

Most of?Guam's?native bird species are extinct because of the snake, which reached the island's thick jungles by hitching rides from the South Pacific on U.S. military ships shortly after World War II. There may be 2 million of the reptiles on?Guam?now, decimating wildlife, biting residents and even knocking out electricity by slithering onto power lines.

More than 3,000 miles away, environmental officials in Hawaii have long feared a similar invasion ? which in their case likely would be a "snakes on a plane" scenario. That would cost the state many vulnerable species and billions of dollars, but the risk will fall if?Guam's?air-drop strategy succeeds.

"We are taking this to a new phase," said Daniel Vice, assistant state director of U.S. Department of Agriculture's Wildlife Services in Hawaii,?Guam, and the Pacific Islands. "There really is no other place in the world with a snake problem like?Guam."

Brown tree snakes are generally a few feet (1 meter) long but can grow to be more than 10 feet (3 meters) in length. Most of?Guam's?native birds were defenseless against the nocturnal, tree-based predators, and within a few decades of the reptile's arrival, nearly all of them were wiped out.

The snakes can also climb power poles and wires, causing blackouts, or slither into homes and bite people, including babies; they use venom on their prey but it is not lethal to humans.

The infestation and the toll it has taken on native wildlife have tarnished?Guam'simage as a tourism haven, though the snakes are rarely seen outside their jungle habitat.

The solution to this headache, fittingly enough, is acetaminophen, the active ingredient in painkillers including Tylenol.

The strategy takes advantage of the snake's two big weaknesses. Unlike most snakes, brown tree snakes are happy to eat prey they didn't kill themselves, and they are highly vulnerable to acetaminophen, which is harmless to humans.

The upcoming mice drop is targeted to hit snakes near?Guam's?sprawling Andersen Air Force Base, which is surrounded by heavy foliage and if compromised would offer the snakes a potential ticket off the island. Using helicopters, the dead neonatal mice will be dropped by hand, one by one.

U.S. government scientists have been perfecting the mice-drop strategy for more than a decade with support from the Department of Defense and the Department of the Interior.

To keep the mice bait from dropping all the way to the ground, where it could be eaten by other animals or attract insects as they rot, researchers have developed a flotation device with streamers designed to catch in the branches of the forest foliage, where the snakes live and feed.

Experts say the impact on other species will be minimal, particularly since the snakes have themselves wiped out the birds that might have been most at risk.

"One concern was that crows may eat mice with the toxicant," said William Pitt, of the U.S. National Wildlife Research Center's Hawaii Field Station. "However, there are no longer wild crows on?Guam. We will continue to refine methods to increase efficiency and limit any potential non-target hazards."

The mouse drop is set to start in April or May.

Vice said the goal is not to eradicate the snakes, but to control and contain them. Just as the snakes found their way to?Guam, they could stow away on a ship, or more likely the cargo hold of an airplane, and begin breeding on other islands around the Pacific or even the U.S. West Coast.

That "snakes on a plane" scenario has officials in Hawaii on edge. The islands of Hawaii, like?Guam, lack the predators that could keep a brown tree snake population in check.

Native Hawaiian birds "literally don't know what to do when they see a snake coming," said Christy Martin, a spokeswoman for the Coordinating Group on Alien Pest Species, a partnership of Hawaii government agencies and private organizations.

A 2010 study conducted by the National Wildlife Research Center found brown tree snakes would cause between $593 million and $2.14 billion in economic damage each year if they became established in Hawaii like they are on?Guam. Power outages would cause the most damage, followed by a projected decline in tourism. The cost of treating snake bites would account for a small share.

"Once we get snakes here, we're never going to be able to fix the situation," Martin said.

Though the snakes are native to Australia and Papua New Guinea,?Guam?is much closer to Hawaii and its snake population is much more dense, meaning it is the primary threat for snake stowaways.

So far,?Guam's?containment seems to be working. Only a few brown tree snakes have ever been found in Hawaii, and none over the past 17 years.

"If we continue doing what we are doing, the chance of success is very high," Vice said. "If what we are doing stops, I think the possibility of the snakes getting to Hawaii is inevitable."
